1979年3日12日，鄧小平同志與北京市大興縣龐各莊百姓一同參加植樹活動。
在43年的時光中，參加植樹節植樹活動的中國公民已達上百億人次。
自2004年起，中國170座城市支持建設“生態城市”倡議。中國政府計劃至2050年植樹造林面積再增加3千5百萬公頃林地。
