威尼斯定期受到惡劣天氣的影響,每四年就會經歷一個高水位期,但一般不會超過110釐米,僅淹浸全城10%的面積。
扎亞稱,“我們遇到了啓示錄大洪水,我沒有誇張,全城80%的區域處於水下,帶來了無法想象的可怕損失。”
威尼斯市政府此前通報稱,該市水位達到創紀綠的187釐米,是該市歷史上第二高的水位。1966年威尼斯的水位曾達到194釐米。
惡劣天氣導致相鄰的佩萊斯特里納島(Pellestrina)上2人死亡。
